In my Catholic grade school across the street from our house, in the two-week summer camp run by the Diocese, in four years in a Jesuit boarding school, in four years at Notre Dame, in 6 years of teaching in Catholic schools, I don’t remember an iota of progressive thinking. While people are falling out over the Pope dying and the new Pope, Trump got around 58% of the Catholic vote.

As a Catholic grade schooler with 2 years at a Catholic high school in Pasadena, Calif., I can only remember fairy tales about Jesus born of the Virgin Mary, crucified and then physically resurrected from the dead. But during one term at Immaculate Heart College for Women in Los Angeles, I'd catch glimpses of a peacenik artist nun Sister Corita Kent in her studio. I took a modern dance class and performed in a televised Christmas program as the transgender Angel Gabriel directed by an avant garde Catholic convert who later wrote in a. poem of despair that Jesus had shed his blood in vain. It took years later for me to discover Dorothy Day, co-founder of the progressive Catholic Worker movement in New York.
