I stopped in the big Barnes & Noble store close to me on Union Square a couple days ago. It has such well-lit, high-ceiling elbow room, it’s an unusual New York store. I wander around its four floors sometimes. On the third floor there are rows of magazines. Rows and rows. For kids too. You forget how many magazines there are. And how good they look.

Thomas McGuane reads his story from the May 10, 2021, issue of ‘The New Yorker’. McGuane has published more than a dozen books of fiction, including the story collections “Gallatin Canyon,” “Crow Fair,” and “Cloudbursts: Collected and New Stories,” which came out in 2018.
